Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk

On September 30- October 2, I joined my sister and 3 other friends on a journey in the fight against breast cancer. We each worked to raise $2100 and we spent countless hours training for this journey. We met up with about 3000 other men and women at Northlake Mall on Friday morning and began our walk towards Piedmont Park. Day one we walked 22.7 miles to Southeastern Athletic complex, where we met up with the gear trucks to get our bags and set up our tent. We took our showers in the trucks that were set up out back and then made our way to the dinner tent. My sweet husband volunteered to be a crew member and was assigned to one of the 7 sweep vans. He was in charge of picking up walkers along the route that were unable to make it to pit stops due to the slow speed of walking or injury or fatigue. Each van had a different theme, and he dressed the part in a hula skirt and coconut bikini top, and drove a decorated van with a grass skirt and pink flamingos on the back. Day two we woke up a bit sore, I am not sure if it was from the 22 mile walk, or sleeping on the hard ground. We made our way to breakfast after packing up the tents and our gear. At 7:30, the route opened up and we were on our way. This day was 23.7 miles, but it felt like it was much, much more! Through out the day, we stopped at the pit stops to "eat, drink, and pee" and check our feet. Amy began to notice that her toe nails were hurting, so at one stop, we checked them out. Apparently, her feet have the ability to grow blisters underneath her toenails!! She became an expert blister popper and foot taper-upper! Melanie and Cyndi also began to grow blisters and despite their fear of needles, became quite good at popping them. Okay, well, Melanie did not actually pop her own blister, but became much better at allowing me and Kelli to do it! This day was by far the hardest day, we walked through Stone Mountain to Perimeter College. We were met by some boy scouts at camp who helped us set up our tents and get our gear from the trucks. We were all very tired and had alot of aches and pains. Amy got dizzy and went to the medical tent and ended up with an IV to rehydrate her. While Amy was hydrating, the rest of us got showered and went to the dinner tent to find out the dinner was yucky. I called my husband, the hero, and asked about getting us a large cheese pizza. He came through and we all loved him for that!! After getting pizza, we all became a bit more upbeat and ready to take on what Sunday had in store for us. Day Three began with a beautiful walk through Decatur, and we saw some amazing homes in Druid Hills. The day wrapped up with a walk along the lake, over a bridge, honored by the cheers of friends and family. Closing Ceremonies at Piedmont Park were truly memorable and inspiring. Although we were all tired and hot and in pain, I think we all realized that what we suffered from pales to what women and men go through when they are diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. The walk generated $6.2 million dollars for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. I am proud of all the girls who walked with me, especially my sister, who does not generally do things that make her sweat. We all walked ALL 60 miles.
